Synopsis:
84 Charing Cross Road tells the story of a 20 year correspondence between struggling New York City based writer of the original book, Helene Hanff, and Frank Doel, chief buyer of Marks & Co, an antiquarian booksellers in London. A love of classic literature leads Hanff to contact the London bookseller to obtain copies of books not available in New York. Over the following two decades a friendship evolves between Hanff and Doel as well as other staff members. Christmas packages are exchanged as are birthday gifts and post WWII food parcels.
The play not only gives an insight in to the lives of the main characters but also provides a social commentary on life on either side of the Atlantic over 20 years from 1949.
